Rank Promotions
Any student testing for rank associated with the UCLA Martial Arts Program must complete the UCLA Martial Arts Rank Form
UCLA Martial Arts ensures the safety of all our students, specifically with regards to how martial arts rank is given/tested etc...The martial arts industry has, like many other industries individuals and organizations that take advantage of the positions they hold, to benefit financially from certain program aspects including rank testing/promotion etc…sometimes this happens because there is a lack of layman knowledge surrounding martial arts belts, instructor certifications and or promotions and some individuals take advantage of this. For this reason the following policies apply to all clubs/programs/students that wish to promote participants in rank within the UCLA Martial Arts Program.
- At no point should anyone solicit students from programs at UCLA to test for rank outside of the UCLA Martial Art programs.
- For employees, volunteers, officers, this could potentially be a breach of the conflict of interest policy outlined in the UCLA Martial Arts handbook and may result in loss of employment and/or ACP violation for clubs.
- Clubs/Coaches/Instructors must notify the Martial Arts Coordinator anytime a promotion in rank is planned. For martial arts clubs this includes any rank tests that participants engage in off campus also.
- People receiving rank must be registered for the program (club or class) giving/performing the rank test.
- Training groups are permitted to give rank but cannot charge students in any fashion at this time. Any special accommodations must be discussed with the Martial Arts Coordinator prior to any testing.
- For all programs ranking and testing processes should be on file with UCLA Martial Arts administration. Details required are;
- How much testing costs
- How the student pays.
- What governing agency/body is providing the rank?
- If there is no recognized governing body, the club must provide a detailed rubric of rank requirements that have been decided upon.
- What the requirements to test are;
- Written Paper/Quiz/Physical Test/Anything else?
- How students learn about the content of each test
- Do students receive information on exactly what is required specifically for each rank or is it by coaches/committee’s discretion?
- Please submit outline to martial arts administration, if by discretion of coach/committee a brief outline of elements needed for promotion need to be on file with martial arts administration (unless there is no governing body associated with rank, see above)
- What denotes the rank given?
- Certificate/T-shirt/Belt/Sash/Stripes/Bandanas
- Do students receive information on exactly what is required specifically for each rank or is it by coaches/committee’s discretion?
- List of all ranks students can gain while with program.
- Any payments must go through the department set up via our payment systems by UCLA Competitive Sports Administrative Staff. No coach/instructor/officer/employee/student is permitted to collect money at any time.
